Redwood Swim Club uses the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. The American Red Cross swim lesson program was developed over many decades, drawing on the real world experiences of countless volunteers, professionals and some highly-trained researchers. Over fifteen years ago, the American Red Cross scrutinized its entire aquatic safety program and decided significant changes were in order. Many nationally respected experts (several key members were living in northern Ohio at the time) in the fields of water safety, child development, education, motor development, swim lesson instruction and other related disciplines gathered on behalf of the American Red Cross to begin reconstruction of the water safety curriculum. After a few years of research and development, new lifeguarding, swim lesson and other water safety programs were published and put into use across the country. The result was a more comprehensive and effective training program for both instructors and students. After more than a dozen years in use, the American Red Cross made minor changes to the Learn-to-Swim program. Redwood’s American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors are now updated with the changes.
